How can CMF improve product power for a commercial truck brand?

Techic supported Scania in a China-oriented commercial vehicle CMF development project, helping translate brand positioning, user insight, material strategy and cost logic into a more recognizable product line.

Client Context

Scania needed more than a color and material proposal

Scania is one of the leading brands in the global commercial vehicle industry. For its China-oriented brand line exploration, the challenge was not simply to make the truck look different. The real question was how to improve product power, build recognition and respond to cost-down requirements under fixed vehicle form and production constraints.

01

China brand positioning

Before CMF development, Techic built a China brand line positioning report to clarify market logic, user expectations and product value direction.

02

Restrained CMF expression

Unlike passenger cars, commercial trucks need a more rational, controlled and credible CMF language. Every effect had to be reasonable, durable and brand-relevant.

03

Product power and cost logic

The solution needed to improve perceived quality and product recognition while also responding to lower material cost and real production feasibility.

Core Question

Why are these CMF trends necessary for Scania?

This question had to be answered in every project review. Techic did not present trends as visual references alone. Each color, material, texture and finish direction was connected back to Scania’s brand position, commercial vehicle usage scenarios, cost requirements and the lifestyle of next-generation truck users.

User Insight

Future truck users are not only tool users

During the project, the user definition evolved. The next generation of truck users may have higher income, stronger self-expression and their own lifestyle habits, from fitness to cabin modification. A commercial vehicle used every day should create confidence, pride and desire to use, not only basic functionality.

Why should a tool-based product feel desirable?

Many century-old industrial brands prove that tools can be robust, precise, beautiful and emotionally attractive. For commercial vehicles moving into international markets, product experience and material quality are becoming key parts of competitiveness.

Techic Approach

Material-driven product enhancement without changing the vehicle form

01

Positioning

Clarify China market positioning, user profile and brand line logic before CMF development.

02

CMF Strategy

Build a restrained commercial vehicle CMF direction around color, material, finish, gloss, tactility and durability.

03

Material Logic

Balance lower material cost, manufacturability and perceived quality through material-driven decision-making.

04

Product Line Identity

Create a recognizable product line identity without relying on expensive form changes or new tooling.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about commercial vehicle CMF design

Why is CMF important for commercial vehicles?

CMF helps commercial vehicle brands improve perceived quality, product experience, brand recognition and user confidence without relying only on form redesign or new tooling.

Can CMF improve product power when the vehicle shape is fixed?

Yes. When the exterior or interior structure is already fixed, CMF can still improve value through color systems, surface texture, gloss control, material tactility, durability and visual consistency.

How is truck CMF different from passenger car CMF?

Truck CMF requires a more restrained and rational expression. It must consider durability, cleaning, maintenance, cost, long-term use and professional credibility, while still creating desire and quality.

Why do leading commercial vehicle brands look for CMF solutions?

Because many product programs focus first on engineering, tooling and cost. CMF provides a high-efficiency way to recover product value, improve user experience and strengthen market recognition.
